Tropical Depression
I believe the combination of the two words to be the most fascinating and beautiful in the English language. Forget about it’s meteorological involvement and say it. Say it out loud. The descriptiveness of the word packs a heavy feeling to it. I don’t ever get to use it enough, but I think about those two words more often than you could ever know. Tropical Depression- Beauty and Sadness.
My life is pretty awesome in the love and friendship department and I would be so bold as to say that my marriage and my friendships are what most people only dream of having because it’s what they see in the movies. It’s true, my marriage is phenomenal, off the charts, amazingly solid and full of easy laughter and my friendships are the kind that are deep rooted and rock solid. Those solid relationships were built over decades, one memory at a time, and THAT part of my life, THAT part – is the Tropical part.
At the very same time that I have all those wonderful things I also have not so wonderful things. I have bills that only someone with student loan debt can understand, and my family (as a whole unit) only gets to spend a few days a year together. I can only remember one thanksgiving that the four of us have ever gotten to spend the day together. There is always something missing. but it’s a situation that we have absolutely no control over so we have to try and make the best of it when we do get a chance. It is bittersweet, and THAT part of my life, THAT part- is the Depression part.
you see I have the most amazing things in the world, but I also have the most hurtful things to counter the amazing. It’s my very own Tropical Depression that I get to live in. It is beautiful and sad, sweet but bitter, paradise yet…………no, there is no word to counter that one, it is just that. it is my paradise.
So that it is known, should Kenny Chesney ever write a song titled “Tropical Depression” (It’s bound to happen, give him time) and his words mirror my above description of how that word makes me feel, then I move my second favorite oxymoronic words up to the number one spot. and those word(s) are- Civil War.

A blogger friend referred me to a database of untranslatable words the other day. I found it fascinating: http://tinyurl.com/bxzravz
